The SMPTE 2018 program committee is co-chaired by two SMPTE Fellows: Thomas Edwards, vice president engineering and development at Fox, and SMPTE Education Director Sara J. Kudrle, product marketing manager for playout at Imagine Communications. The committee is being overseen by SMPTE Education Director for Conference Programs Yvonne Thomas, product manager at Arvato Systems, and by SMPTE Education Vice President Richard Welsh, co-founder and CEO of Sundog Media Toolkit.
The technical conference program will include 76 paper presentations, in three concurrent sessions, plus the keynote over three days.
Topics areas are based on the papers submitted. We expect the following areas to be of focus:
Professional Media Networking
IP/Ethernet networking for carriage of live production video and audio is now a reality. Users are beginning to recognize the signal density and workflow flexibility advantages of networked media, but it is clear that the full promise of IP has not been realized yet. There are still concerns about device configuration complexity, compression vs uncompressed video, the practicality of software-based and virtualized media processing, and the ability to use the public cloud. With the ink now drying on the essential standards and specifications, the challenge to the industry is to craft standards-based interoperable solutions effectively and to gather and utilize best practices in real-world implementations. This session will explore how we can perfect the use of professional media networking.
The digital revolutions in television and cinema have placed a spotlight on the pixel. As engineers consider what makes a pixel ‘better,’ answers have come in objective physical quantities - there should be more of them on each frame and more of them available each second. They should reconstruct larger color volume and deliver a wider dynamic range. Beyond the physics and engineering, we must also fully consider the holistic quality of experience for the human observer. This session will emphasize studies of UHD/HDR/HFR/WCG on integrated image quality and provide guidance for keeping future television and cinema inventions focused on delivering genuinely excellent perceptual experiences.
Managing the Seemingly Unmanageable
File base workflows continue to evolve, and the size and complexity of productions continue to increase. The number of required deliverables has grown exponentially, the choices are complex, content storage requires petabytes, and people are distributed. With the addition of new tools and methodologies, workflows can achieve greater simplification and flexibility that is needed for these dynamic business challenges. Come and learn about the new techniques and technologies, either standardized or customizable, for handling even the most complex workflows and discover how to manage the seemingly unmanageable.
What Does Image Quality Look Like?
As brighter displays, immersive visual experiences, and high dynamic range become the norm for how we experience motion pictures, the methods by which we evaluate image quality continue to evolve. Not only do we need to engineer baselines for calibrations and ambient light, but we’ll also need to come to a consensus on perception — which may mean not coming to a consensus at all. This session will address the various issues at stake for the present and future of evaluating image quality, from black levels and visibility thresholds to monitoring across platforms, and be evaluating brightness and contrast in an HDR setting.
Is AI More Than Automation in our Industry?
This session will explore why AI algorithms will become a must for any content producer and provider. AI is to become an integrated component in our system landscapes and therefore broadcasters and producers can use A.I. technology to harness previously untapped metadata within new or archived content through automated metadata curation and extraction. One of the most critical aspects of AI is Machine Learning (ML) which brings together several advanced technologies, including high-performance networks, advanced computing power and cloud and storage solutions. Learn about practical examples of how AI can be used in our media industry and how to create and develop Machine Learning practices to ensure the highest quality in the metadata.
Is OTT Still Over the Top or King of the Cloud for Media Consumption?
Over the Top services have been a part of the industry for several years now. Once seen as something that was laid over the top of more traditional media delivery services, there is significant evidence that it is a now primary option for media consumption. There are specific demographics for whom it is the preferred method. The program committee is reviewing submissions that cover a wide range of OTT technologies including encryption, cloud-based transcoding, architecture designs, the challenge of managing and monitoring platforms, and HEVC enabled 4K. There is sure to be exciting discussion and differences of opinions about these technologies.
Cloud providers offer an essential toolkit for many users employing a massive amount of storage, CPU cycles and services ready to be used. With the availability of Machine Learning, media services are becoming available and getting mature. Examples such as image recognition, speech to text, and translation, will assist to increase the production and searchability of media assets. The cloud promises to bring flexibility, scalability and shareability to media production. This year's paper submissions offer a wide range of applications that will make use of the cloud. Learn how the building blocks of our industry are moving from being dedicated 19-inch equipment in your rack towards a dematerialized version into the cloud.
The Metamorphosis of Today's Encoding Technologies
There are many different and divergent ideas in today's ever-evolving encoding ecosystems including UHD/HDR, the new MPEG-I initiative as well as new ways of thinking about compressing images such as TICO and Multi-Scale Video Coding. Come and join us in this SMPTE session and discover what others are exploring in encoding technology and become a part of the discussion around the ways that the slow caterpillar has transformed into a beautiful butterfly.
You may not realize it, but display technology is driving many recent advances in video and film production like high dynamic range and Ultra HDTV. Moreover, there's no slowing down: Factories in Asia are already gearing up to manufacture 8K televisions this year. Brighter illumination sources such as quantum dots are in widespread use to reproduce HDR and WCG images in consumer televisions. Fine pitch light-emitting diodes (LEDs) may reinvent consumer TV and kill off cinema projection along the way. Even traditional concepts of displays are being challenged by light field technology, virtual reality, and LED cinema screens. This session will explore new ways to format and show electronic images in the home and at the cinema (and perhaps even in your head!).
Taming Your Metadata – Harnessing the Power of MAM
Metadata is key, and since we live in a data-driven world, the need for metadata and a future-proof MAM has never been more demanding than today. A modern MAM is deeply integrated in the system landscape and instead of a huge monolithic block microservices break down the API to become more business focus in serving user´s needs. The way of working remotely and to access content from anywhere in the world will be enabled through the cloud, and this session will show examples of how a future-proof MAM looks like and new technologies used will influence decision making during the production process.
