The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers® (SMPTE®), the organization whose standards work has supported a century of advances in entertainment technology and whose membership spans the globe, has issued a call for technical manuscript proposals for the SMPTE 2018 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition (SMPTE 2018), which will be held Oct. 23-25 at a new venue, the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in downtown Los Angeles. Program sessions address advancements in current technology, plus future-looking developments in media technology, content creation, image and sound, and the allied arts and sciences.

Early submission of paper proposals will ensure consideration by the SMPTE 2018 program committee. 28 May 2018 is the firm deadline for abstract submissions.

Authors of manuscript proposals selected by the 2018 program committee will have the opportunity to present at the event and network with the industry’s most esteemed technology thought leaders and engineering executives.


Proposed papers must be informational and must address technical theory, research, innovation, application, or practice specific to any of the evolving technologies associated with the media and entertainment industry.


Papers that are commercial or promotional will not be considered, nor will those that have already been published.

Student Papers are strongly encouraged.


To Submit an Abstract:


  • Interested parties are invited to submit a topic heading, paper title, and an abstract.
  • Abstracts should be between 300 – 400 words and must specify the following information:
    • Top three informational takeaways for the audience in bullet point form (required)
    • What type of paper is proposed:
      • Research/Theory oriented
      • Novel Technological Approaches
      • Case Study
      • Tutorials
      • Application/Implementation
  • Please also describe any media proposed for presentation, if the manuscript proposal us selected, such as video clip, or technical demonstration, etc.
  • In addition to the abstract, keywords, name(s) of author(s) and the presenter’s name, title, company, mailing address, telephone, and e-mail address, must be provided no later than 28 May 2018.


Important: Authors must ensure the submitted abstract is clear, concise, and fully describes the subject matter covered in the proposed manuscript.

  3. Fill in required information
  4. Check “I consent to the EDAS Privacy Policies” box
  5. Click the “Add This Person” Button


When registered with EDAS:


  1. Log-in to EDAS https://edas.info/
  2. Go to https://edas.info/newPaper.php?c=24543
  3. Enter the paper’s title
  4. Add the author’s name
  5. Enter the synopsis in the “Abstract” field
  6. Press “Submit”


SMPTE will notify authors of final selection no later than 20 July 2018.


To ensure SMPTE has time to process papers for the conference, selected speakers must provide an electronic version of the final technical manuscript to SMPTE no later than 28 September 2018.


Please note: A technical manuscript is required for all abstracts accepted for SMPTE 2018.
